say what?

Seems like I’ve said, “sheesh” a lot lately. And, here it is again.

What the heck is Instagram? I was going to ask on Facebook but, seriously, didn’t want my friends to know that I didn’t know. I know it has something to do with pictures and hash names or something like that. I don’t even know what a hash-whatever is. I know they use a whole lot of #’s but I don’t know why.

OK, I’m just going to wait right here by the computer until someone tells me what it’s all about. Because I can’t possibly go out in public without knowing what everyone is talking about.

PS: I would also like to know how to update my picture on my blogs [on the iPad] to my knew makeover picture. How pathetic is that?

Instagram is kind of fun for people who are never without their smartphones, namely an iPhone. You can use it with an iPod or iPad, but it’s not quite the same. People who have their phones super glued to their hands take lots of pictures (and the built in camera on an iPhone is really nice, whereas the camera on my crappy pay as you go phone is, well, crappy). Instagram lets you upload the photo right from your camera to instagram, where you can also quickly apply a bunch of filters that make the photo look super processed, or old, or black and white, or sepia toned or whatever.

You don’t have to use hashtags, but lots do. Hashtags, I think, work better for Twitter. Like, if I’m writing on Twitter (think a super short facebook -like update about what I’m doing) about homeschooling I can add a #homeschool hashtag, which makes it searchable. So if someone is looking on Twitter for homeschool advice, they’ll find my little post. People also use hashtags just to be funny. Eg: I’m having terrible cramps today #TMI

I use Instagram, but only pretty rarely. Just when I remember I own an iPod and can find it and charge it. But there are folks who post pictures on instagram all day long… there’s a funny video about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn-dD-QKYN4 It’s got a BIG swear word in it, so beware. But it mocks the whole “taking pictures of every single thing all day every day and posting to instagram” kinda funny.

    Hope that helps!

That video was hilarious! You really should have posted this on facebook, Dorothy – I’m sure there are lots of people who don’t really know what these things are…
